The Conclusion of Durak Iron Bane

You return to the mountain at a steady pace, happy with your findings. It feels so good to be able to use your knowledge of fantasy romances, paranormal romances, urban fantasy romances, and monster romances to such effect. The patchwork travel bag that contains the books strikes your thigh with a steady rhythm as you walk.

That castle continues to be highlighted by the brilliant moonlight. Creatures fly across the towers and crawl across the ramparts. That shimmering confirms the ward is still in place, holding the creatures of the abyss back. But where is Durak?

“Well, Trouble, there you be.” Durak steps up from the fog and purses his lips at you as if challenging you to a mock fight. The expression swiftly fades into a full grin. He no longer carries his shield with him, and that musky cologne with the charred cedar and mossy notes is stronger now. He still has the same confidence as before. If he has been busy fighting off monsters, he doesn’t appear even mildly fatigued. “Did you find what I need?”

“Found them and got copies of each one so you don’t have to rely on the list alone,” you answer with a crooked smile. “But just to be troublesome, I mixed up the order for you.”

“Ah, love, you speak to my heart.” He grins as he accepts the patchwork travel bag from you. With a low whistle, he looks over the books inside. “This is truly a treasure trove. You have my thanks, Trouble. You don’t need to do anything further on my account. This is more than enough, and I’ll be able to strengthen the wards to protect us all. Thanks to you, this will be a good holiday celebration.”

“Well, it was fun,” you admit. “I’m almost sad it’s over.”

He chuckles as he slings the bag over his shoulder. “Well, if you enjoyed this, love, you should go on up the mountain. There are lots more who need the aid of a kind soul like yourself. But be careful. Some are good. Some are not. Appearances can be deceptive. May you always find the very best places to be trouble, Trouble.”

“I’m sure I will. Until we meet again.” You tip your head forward, grinning.

He chuckles as he backs away. Then, with a wink, he jumps off the edge of the cliff and disappears from sight.

Still so dramatic. You suppress a giggle as you turn your face toward that northern path. As fascinating as the castle is, you want to see what other adventures this place holds. After all, you are Trouble, and you are very good at finding it and using your knowledge of romances to get yourself out. Perhaps you’ll find more people who are just as entertaining.
