The No Fae Path Quest

Important Announcement!

Thank you so much to every single one of you for your participation in this event, both in playing and supporting. We are so grateful to you.

We are currently preparing the treasure rooms and getting things set up to contact the winners. You will receive an email when the treasure rooms go live, and we will contact you by email if you have won some of the other prizes as well.

Thank you again!

Feel free to skip the story and go to the next heading (Your Quest: Rules and Forms) if you want to get straight to the rules, quest, and eligible stories.

Cendric the Shadow Weaver

You glance up. Atop the portal, a raven caws. It tilts its head as it studies you. Then it spreads its wings.

You follow it through.

Light spirals around you. Shadows twist. Your stomach clenches.

Then you’re there.

Deep in the dark forest from your dreams, heavy branches twisting overhead. It smells of decayed leaves, wet soil, and—something primal. Terrifying.

A marsh sprawls to your left. A narrow grey path cuts to your right. Then—you stop.

It’s not just the forest from your dreams. It’s the man you’ve seen there as well.

A warrior, luminous. His blond hair glows like silver fire in the moonlight. A dark red scar slashes over his brow and another cuts from the top of his temple and down along his cheek, evidence of at least one battle hard fought. He holds up his sword and two fingers as if preparing to summon something. Shadows rise from the ground around him.

Then he stops. His storm-grey eyes narrow in on you, then widen as if he recognizes you. Has he had the dreams as well?

You stay where you are, hand braced on your leather belt. You meet his gaze. If he has something to say, he should speak first. Somehow you are not afraid. Only curious.

“Are you the one the gods sent?” he asks, his voice soft as silk and yet deadly. The shadows flare around him, coiling about as if they have a mind of their own. “Are you the answer?”

You smile a little. Who sent you and why isn’t something you really want to discuss. What a mysterious place. It’s only fair that you too are mysterious. “What answer are you seeking?”

He lowers his sword. The shadows and smoke calm and curl about his worn leather boots. “I am Cendric the Shadow Weaver, and I am on a quest to save my sister Bri from Morrow, the sorcerer. He stole her away and claims he will kill her or worse, if he is not given what he wants.”

You’ve heard of this sorcerer. Bad news indeed. “And what does the dread sorcerer require?” You fold your arms as you study him.

His chiseled chaw tightens. “Stories,” he says. “Specifically romances that do not feature fae. He absolutely hates fae. Says they’re the reason for the war. Prejudiced and vicious, if you ask me.”

You shrug. It isn’t as if you expect evil sorcerers to be the most open-minded people in the world. “I actually know quite a few stories.”

“They can’t be just any love story without fae.” He pulls a piece of parchment from inside his glove and unfolds it. “You’ll see he is quite specific.”

“That won’t be a problem.” He underestimates your knowledge of stories. Even with these limitations, you know precisely where to look.

“Thank you.” He releases a heavy sigh, then places it in your hand. His fingers linger against your palm for half a breath. “If you can help me with this, you will forever have my gratitude. I can get you one token for every story that fits a criteria here. And you can use those to compete for access to a particular treasure. But I promise, if you complete this, I’ll get you access to a special treasure room with certain items you may find beneficial.”

You tuck the parchment away, noting briefly that it has a lovely design on it and some rather specific requirements. No matter. You’ll make short work of this, no matter what it requires.

“You truly must be the one the gods sent.” He studies your face, that small smile curling higher. “I feel hope again. Thank you. I am certain we will meet again soon.” He bows his head and steps back. Then the shadows sweep up around him.

Only the moonlight piercing the canopy remains in the place he once stood.

Apparently someone else liked to be mysterious as well.

You smile and remove the parchment to take a look at what you must find.

You’ll meet again soon. That you know for certain.

Rules

To complete the Quest, you can only use stories that are included in this event. (All of the No Fae stories are included on this page.)

You can only use a story for one element on the list in each quest.

As part of the point is to read new stories and celebrate ones you’ve already read, we’ve got a fun little tweak. If you know or discover that a story on the official list for the path fits one of the items for your quest (even if the trope card doesn’t include it), you can include it on your form.

So, for instance, if you’re looking for a fairy tale retelling and there’s a story on the official list that you know is a Beauty and the Beast, you can include that story as fulfilling the requirement even if it isn’t listed on the story’s trope card. You can also read the book’s blurb for added clues.

Be kind to your fellow readers and other authors.

The Forms

Your parchment includes the stories you need to find. You can download it as a PDF or you can fill out the Google Form. The prompts are the same.

(If you download it as a PDF and fill it out on your device, make sure you save your answers.)

Bonus Tokens

In addition to the regular tokens, you can get bonus tokens by completing the following acts.

One extra token for every story you share in an individual social media post except for the story with a trope, theme, or element that you think should get more attention. (Yes, you can post on multiple platforms.)

Two extra tokens for sharing on social media  an individual post about the story with a trope, theme, or element that you think should get more attention. Be sure to state what the trope/theme/element is in your post and why it matters to you.

Use #nofaepathbonus (and if you want to absolutely bless me, save off the links and paste them in the forms or an email to make sure we definitely see them).

(We have graphics of all the stories here so you don’t have to make something separate. Just look look under the author’s last name to find the stories.)

Submitting Your Form

Once you’ve gathered up your collection of stories, you’ll need to turn them in so we can verify.

You can turn your stories in three different ways.

  1. Complete this form and directly post your answers (if you do this, you don’t need to turn in anything else. The form will allow you to return to it and edit your answers).
  2. Save and fill out the PDF and then upload it to this form.
  3. Directly email the form to faeornofae@farofeb.com. Make sure to include any of the bonus activities you have done as well.

Make sure to submit your completed form by July 3 at 11:59 PM EST.

If you have any problems, please feel free to email faeornofae@farofeb.com.

Ready to get started?

Great!
