The Conclusion of Cendric the Shadow Weaver’s No Fae Quest

You return to the dark forest, pleased with yourself. Fireflies circle through the trees, brightening the mood almost as if they can feel your thoughts. These stories are excellent. While Morrow the sorcerer may not be a good man, he will accept this selection, and it makes you happy to know you have been able to help Cendric so swiftly.

Shadows form in the air before you. A form materializes in the mist and smoke.

You step back, aware of a sharp smoky scent laced with cedar and bergamot.

Cendric appears before you, his face pale but his gaze piercing and determined. “You returned more swiftly than I expected. Is it possible you have succeeded already? Or did you encounter some trouble?”

“No. The task is done. Here are the love stories. None of which involve fae.” You offer him the folded parchment.

His eyes widen. He then steps closer. “Truly?”

“See for yourself.” You pass it to him with a flourish.

His eyebrows lift as he looks over the completed list. Then he laughs. “This is incredible.” The shadows around him relax. He turns his gaze back to you, then takes your hand in his and brushes his lips across your fingers. “Thank you. Because of you, I can pay the ransom and free my sister. I am forever in your debt.”

You tilt your head, finding it hard not to smile. Your skin tingles. “It is my pleasure to be able to help you.”

“I will see to it that you are rewarded.” He releases your hand. “If it were not for the pressing nature of my sister’s rescue, I would like to linger and speak with you more. If we should encounter one another again, perhaps there will be time for that.”

“Perhaps indeed.” Yours is a mysterious existence. It’s hard to say who you will come across in the future. But you would not be opposed to encountering him again. Warmth spreads through your cheeks and neck.

He lifts the parchment and glances over the entries once more. “Exceptional work. You are indeed the answer the gods sent.” He taps his fingers to his temple as he bows, his steely-grey eyes fixed upon you.

You dip your head forward. “Blessings and success on your path and to your sister.”

“Thank you. I look forward to seeing you again. I believe we would travel well together. And who knows what might unfold?” The shadows sweep up around him. And when they vanish, he is gone once again. The stillness of the forest engulfs you.

Yes, you most certainly shall meet again. You smile even more as you turn back to the path and start on your way, listening for any other stirrings or calls that may guide you to your next adventure.
